Is it time to start a blog?

Many people fear starting a website because of the misconceptions that you must be a great writer to succeed. That is not the case. Most people visit blogs looking for personal perspectives on things. And that is the reason why most bloggers write their articles in a conversational and informal style.

Many successful bloggers also write a variety of topics and post on the same website. So, nothing to worry about your writing skills level when you want to make a blog.

Understanding a Blog

A blog refers to a website focusing on written content or blog posts. In the current culture, you will often hear various types of blogs such as celebrity blogs, news blogs, health blogs, tech gadgets blogs, and more. But as you’ll see, this guide will highlight how you can start your online writing on any topic imaginable.

Now, let’s start a website!

1. Pick a Blog Name

The first step is to have a blog name. If you are sure of the name of your website or the niche to write about, skip to the next step.

When you have an idea of what to name your blog, check it to make sure no other blogger has already registered it.

If the website name is available, register it. And if taken, try these options:

First, try a different version of the domain extension. For example, my website is lachiehiriart.com, so if it was already registered, I could have tried the .org or .net version of my name.

The other option is to add small words to make the blog name look different such as “the,” “best,” or “my.” For example, this blog is called Lachiehiriart.com where I could have used TheLachiehiriart.com.

Lastly, add dashes between the words of the blog. For example, instead of writerscenter.com, you can use writers-center.com

2. Choose a Blog Name or Topic

First, choose a topic then you can get a name. That is in case you don’t have a website name.

Perhaps, you want to start a blog but you are not sure of where to start or what to write about. There are various ways you can find great topics:

A personal Blog

When you choose to start a personal site, it is all about you. The website will have a variety of topics; probably on things you do daily or weekend, music, or random thoughts. Starting a personal website will be a great way to share your thoughts with the world without sticking to one topic.

Life Experiences

You can start a site on lessons you have learned since you were young. Sharing your thoughts and knowledge is helpful in various ways.

For example, you can start a website with the idea of being a doctor’s wife or a soldier’s wife. With the current health situation due to COVID-19, doctors are the front team to help curb the spread of this pandemic.

You, therefore, have to share your experiences and thoughts of having married a person in the health field – like a doctor. And it is not limited to one side. Your wife could also be a doctor while you work in a different field.

Other life experiences could be dealing with a diseased person, or how you acquired success in your business.

Hobbies and Passions

Many people write about their interests and passions. That becomes a great place to start online blog writing. For example, traveling, cooking, sports, fashion, cars, mountain climbing, and more.

However, even when you start a site about obscure hobbies, it can be successful because your audience is anyone with the internet across the world.

A good domain name should be descriptive to help potential visitors understand your website. So it is not always about choosing any name.

If you want to start blogging on a variety of topics, I recommend choosing your name or a variation of it. That is because the website is about you.

Once you have a name(s) to use, now choose a domain extension. I would prefer you choose a .com but you can as well try .org or .net because they also work well.

It is essential to keep in mind you cannot add spaces between words.

3. Host Your Website Online

You already have a website name, it’s time you take your website online. The process may be technical or challenging for the first time. But the steps below will help you walk through hassle-free and effortless.

When you want to get your website online, you require two vital things: blogging software and web hosting.

The amazing thing is you will find these packaged together.

What is a hosting company?

This refers to the company that will store all your files online and deliver them to the audience after they search for your blog name. So you must have a hosting company before you start a website. There are many web hosting companies such as BlueHost, SiteGround, etc.

What is blogging software?

This is a software you use to build a blog. The commonly used software is WordPress blogging software. It is easy to use and customize.

4. Customize Your Website

Once you have registered your domain and purchased a hosting package, it is time to take your blog online. Customize a beautiful blog from scratch and start blogging.

Log in to your host provider and begin to customize your blog. You will find WordPress software, download it and start to build your website through these steps:

  • Change Website Design

After downloading WordPress software and installing it, your blog will go live automatically. So, you will log in to your WordPress dashboard to make changes to the blog.

You already have an idea of how you want your blog to look. The great thing about this software, it allows you to make changes in the layout and design with a few clicks.

The blog layout you want will depend on the “theme” you choose. A theme will control the whole website design. And if you want to change the theme, click on the “appearance” option on the left menu.

  • Choose a Theme

There are countless WordPress themes, both free and premium versions. However, once you have WordPress installed, you will find the common blog themes. These are well-designed and clean themes to use for any website. In fact, the world’s top bloggers use these free themes.

You can also change the theme and choose a specific design. Search for the best free WordPress blog themes and install one that suits your needs. Activate the theme by clicking the “Activate” button and that’s it! The activity changes the entire design of the website.

4. Write and Publish a Blog Post

Now, your blog is running, you have to do some blogging. Here is how to create your first content.

Check on the left menu while still logged in to your account. Click on “Posts.”

Create the First Blog Post

Every new website has a sample post already published there. You don’t need the default post, so click “Trash” to delete it.

To add a new post, click on the “Add New” post. As the editor of the website, enter the title of the blog at the top box. On the lower box, begin writing to add your content.

Perhaps you want to add images to your post, click on “Add Image” and upload your image from the computer. The screen allows you to also make adjustments to the picture. And when the post is ready, click on “Publish.”

That simple and your post is online awaiting readers.

Content to be on Your Blog

You have to choose the kind of content to have on your website. That could be either static or dynamic content.

What’s Static Content?

The meaning of static content is that the content never changes or does not often. The pages are accessed via the menu of the website. So you have to include a few pages to provide the audience with the needed tools.

Make sure the static content pages are in place before you can launch your blog.

These static pages include:

About Me/Us

The page includes a biographical summary of you and your mission statement. In this section remember to answer these queries. How does your passion for the topic develop? What you want to share with the world. And your ultimate objectives for the blog.

Contact Me (Us)

The role of this page is to allow visitors to reach you or the author. That provides the visitors with assurance that the author is real and reachable.

You can add your custom email address, phone number, and physical address. Or choose to add a simple contact form and keep your personal information private. Add links to your social profiles as well.

Disclaimer Page

This is a less popular but well-thought page. If you choose to monetize your blog, then you have to describe how you want to generate income. It is a must-have page and you should not overlook it, according to FTC guidelines.

Perhaps you are running an affiliate blog and you have to endorse a product. You stand to get a profit by linking to the product, such a relationship must be disclosed.

Privacy Policy

When you collect data from visitors, you have to create this page explaining how you are collecting data, sharing, or using it. And if you implement Google Analytics or Google AdSense account, you need a Privacy Policy page. It is a page required by GDPR and CCPA.

Terms of Service

The page is required for a blog with a running store or you sell services. The Terms of Service page will help lessen your potential liability.

All the above static pages will be linked to the footer menu of the blog. They should be accessible from the home page.

What’s a Dynamic Content?

Dynamic content refers to your blog and the essential content you create for the audience. As a content creator, you infuse your blog with informative content to offer the audience stories, opinions, facts, and tips. The content you write will engage visitors to allow them to come back to learn more.

Submit blog content regularly at specific intervals because waiting for months will not build an audience posting the content at least weekly and driving traffic will help build a brand.

Tips for Writing a Great Content for Blogs

Writing great content for your blog has many benefits. First, you can create an audience to follow you for the content you write.

Each blog post should be engaging, informative, and of good length. In most cases, it will not be easy to create new blog ideas, you have to regularly mix up the time to keep things lively and interesting.

The blog is your space to fill with something relevant to the audience. But before writing blog articles, there are things to keep in mind. I have highlighted some vital elements required in each piece of content.

Let’s explore further:

Define Your Content

The first thing that will attract a reader is the topic of the content. Create an alluring title of the post that stimulates curiosity and attracts clicks. Take the opportunity to clearly define the topic or what to teach people with the first paragraph of the introduction.

In the same section, before you finish with the introduction, provide a possible hook that can keep readers reading.

Make the Content Long

Longer content is better, but break it up. It should include detailed information on the topic you are discussing.

However, not all visitors will read the whole content, sentence by sentence and one paragraph to the other. They need information on a specific point. So they will skim any content with lengthy paragraphs and even pop out of your content. Readers enjoy tidbits.

Write short paragraphs with spaces. Use standout quotes and lists, images, headings, and sub-headings to allow readers to find what they want at ease.

Engage Readers

After every post, keep your visitors engaged. The common tactic most bloggers use is to leave the visitors with a meaningful question. Ask them to reply via the comments. The simple task will increase your engagement tenfold.

Unique Content

Your content must be original and unique. Avoid posting plagiarized content because your blog will face consequences.

Let your content flow from your brain, experience, heart, and knowledge base. When you want to add more information, you can check on other ideas in your field, but the content should come from you. It will help your blog to grow.

Original Images

While you can use stock images from different free image sites, it’s recommended you also use your photos and graphic work.

If you choose free images, manipulate them using a free photo editor to look original.

Edit Your Work

Before you publish your work in your blog, it should be sufficiently edited. Without adequate proofreading of your articles, they will look unprofessional. You edit to eliminate grammatical and typographical errors.

If you are not sure of your grammar, try using available software in the market like Grammarly.

Launch Your Blog

Congratulations! Now, you know how to create a blog, design, write content and publish it. The next thing is to promote your blog to receive more visitors.

5. Promote Your Blog

After you write great content and publish it on your blog isn’t the end. In order for your blog to get more visitors, you have to spend time promoting it.

There are strategies you would consider to help promote your blog. Try to use a few of them to see whether it will work out for you.

6. Make Money With Your Blog

Blogs are extremely lucrative once done correctly. However, it requires enough time and patience before you can start to make money. Don’t expect to start earning the first week or the first month.

It takes about six months or a year before a blog can provide you with a steady income flow. Blogging requires hard work and dedication to make money. Once you have a large audience, there are several options to monetize your blog.

Consider these strategies of selling:

  • Advertising space
